Return to the fun-damentals

2016 – coding improvements continue. This in the past would mean more feature enhancements but nowadays it means less and less is more.

APIs are constantly updating so I have been tweaking the code to work best with a bunch of third party media suppliers and their APIs. A more stable qued is the result.

I am looking to divorce the dataset from the database, or at least make it an option. Example (in text form). Build a set of cuepoints for a given piece of media. save the data set in Timed Text or SubViewer formay. Then allowing for the reimporting of the data set at a later date on another site like YouTube. So you would be correct in thinking qued allows the last bit to happen! Export we have, but what about import back into qued? Nope. This is going into the road map so data is free and im/ex/portable.

MixCloud | SoundCloud | AudioBoo(m) – yep I want to add them as sources. More code. MixCloud has the API need to investigate the others.

In 2016 I will be partnering with radio stations and using qued as an archiving solution. Who want to know what is in their archive and to me able to mine it fast?

Lastly for now an experimental viewer for qued in the making – demo page

more tagging

Humans adding tags helps Qued understand what is relevant.

Previously tags were added. now the tagging gets granular.
example http://qued.tv/q/?irish/radio

And each user now has a home media wall
example my wall http://qued.tv/q/?QR1 (where “1” is my system ID) this link is located in the menu under My Account >> Activity >> My Qued Media for each user that is logged in. More will be added.

The login sytem had a domain bug which is fixed. Tnx to peter donegan for pointing it out.

Major work has happened on new embedding method. details of this exciting feature to follow.

Updates: Youtube

qued.tv has switched players for Youtube (YT).

I was unhappy with the lost endings on some YT videos in the JW player. I was also noticing a large amount of videos were claiming to be not embeddable due to owner restriction, this was untrue. Video from YT with adverts seemed to not embed in JW Player but could embed in blogs, facebook & blip.fm. I was going to deploy a chromeless player, but a YT player with HD options seemed to make more sense.

This means that video subtitles from cue points are disabled (for now) and will return in an optional pop down box controlled by javascript & TT Subtitles XML file. Same feature will drive Vimeo subtitles.

System features are being monitored to see if they all behave. CTRL-Q to create a cue point seems a bit sticky on page load.

Updates: CTRL-Q & edit mode.

What’s been happening since the last updates in January? Well the simple but important one is the quickest way to cue a new point is CTRL-Q. Now why didn’t I think of that before. Works well, but has been sticky in IE8.

The player has a horizontal play bar added 15/05/2011. This means there is less need to see the edit section in play back mode. So if you want to go under the hood and change / describe points etc. then click edit (bottom left) to expand the editor.

Shorter URLs. http://qued.tv/?media=14188 is now http://qued.tv/14188 that is a saving of 7 characters!
http://qued.tv/14188~~33.4 still works for cue points that exist, or for making them on the fly in the URL. The old longer URLs are still supported.

Page titling now includes the media title. Now why was this overlooked before 🙂

Searches & tags now have taxonomy like home pages. example http://qued.tv/q?sodshow. Lacks pagination but covers the latest 1-48 media matches.

Other minor updates too boring to document here and code clean ups too. There has also been some revision to the core code to enhance cueing on page load in particular.

Next on the agenda. HTML5 detection. Android/Chrome App. and a bookmarklet to make media curation easier. Another look at the Worpresss plugin to advance video embedded like the way audio works now.

Podcasts: pushed = 12% polled = 88%

Updates: Search & Import merged

Some recent changes to the UI.

Search & Import are the same function, well Import has become search (terms) & import (urls), the search page still just does searches. Search results display will be upgraded shortly. Search results order, first media in qued is returned, then results from Youtube, Soon I will add vimeo results and Google results for MP3 FLV and MP4.

Accesskeys have been fixed. Cue points 1-35 are accessed with Alt-Key of IE & Chrome and with Alt+Shift+Key in Firefox. Keys 1-35 are [1-9][q-p][a-l][z-m] where 1=1 & m=35. Accesskeys are very handy for rapid fire recuing.

Minor design changes: Descriptions are in a textarea to conserve space. Update Cuepoints link renamed Refresh Cuepoints.

Vimeo. The method of playing vimeo has changed. Vimeo is now shown in a vimeo player. Cuepoints work as they always did now via the vimeo API. Subtitles are not functioning for vimeo videos currently 🙁

Lastly qued past its 10,000th piece of media. Podcasts aggregated to the system stands at about 150 (rising sharply). About 1% of podcasts are pushed 99% are polled.

new skin & plugin newsvendor

thanks to peter for the new design. most recent development work has been focused offsite on the wordpress plugin. newsvendor.com is making good use of it. Over time it will adapt to be fully embed playable with cueing, making dedicated blogs perfect galleries for qued’s digital media curation by topic or by media ownership.

example use of the plugin.

update

new embed plays the video in iframe and allows cues in frame.
